What is everything you need to know about keeping a garter snake as a pet?

I really want a garter snake and i'm still trying to convince my mom. If I know everything about them and how to take care of them and what they need, it will show her how much I really want one. Could anyone please give any knowlage they have of keeping a pet garter? Thanks to all!
