Did i miss something on southland??!?

last week the episode 'the runner' was on tv and i got mega confused because Detective Lydia Adams partner since the beginning of season 2 (Detective Rene Cordero) was suddenly gone and replaced with another guy... yet there was no explanation and the characters acted like he'd been there the whole time... now either i forgot something from the episode before or they didn't say? please help!!!
