Mechanic said that some 96 mercury sables were made w/o power steering pressure hose, should i replace mine?

I was told by my mechanic that to replace my power steering pump and pressure hosing it would run me about $800, then yesterday I was told that some mercury sables made in 1996 were made without the pressure hosing, is this true, and if not should i replace it? How would I know I need to? I don't see any fluid from the pump or anywhere else on the car except for my oil leaking and I was told I had a steering pump leak. I know that it is going because when I turn the steering wheel it sounds like it is rubbing, I just don't want to have to replace the hosing if it isn't necessary.
